While exploring Shapo Funabashi (1st floor),
I found this traditional Japanese sweet called Kusamochi at a shop named Ninigi.
🤣 “This isn’t matcha!?”
I once saw a post on X where someone said:
“I bought a green mochi at a convenience store… and it tasted like grass, not matcha.”
Honestly… that’s kind of accurate 😂
🌿 What is Kusamochi?
Kusamochi is a traditional Japanese sweet made by:

- Mixing yomogi (Japanese mugwort) into rice dough
- Wrapping it around sweet red bean paste (anko)
So yes…
👉 It’s green because of herbs, not matcha!
🍡 Taste & Texture
The first thing you notice is the fresh herbal aroma of yomogi.
It’s slightly earthy, but very pleasant.

The red bean paste inside is lightly sweet,
so it doesn’t overpower the natural flavor.
👉 Simple, but very satisfying.
🌸 A Taste of Japanese Spring
Kusamochi is a seasonal sweet, usually available until around March.

Other popular spring wagashi include:
- Sakura mochi (cherry blossom rice cake)
👉 Together, they represent the flavors of spring in Japan.
💰 Price & Calories

- Price: 150 yen
- Calories: 130 kcal
A light and affordable traditional snack.
✍️ Final Thoughts
✔ Herbal, fresh, and unique flavor
✔ Not matcha—something completely different
✔ A must-try for wagashi beginners
👉 If you visit Japan in spring, don’t miss Kusamochi!
